It is peak cottage season in Ontario, and if you spend your summer weekends up north, you know the cottage kitchen lives a different life than the one at home. It sits empty for months, gets slammed for two weeks in July, hosts questionable fish cleaning operations, and nobody wants to spend real money on it. That is exactly why used appliances and cottages are a perfect match.
Cottage appliances work part time. Paying full price for a fridge that runs four months a year is hard math to defend. A quality used fridge at a fraction of the cost does the same job, and every used unit at Al's Appliance is inspected and tested before it leaves the store, so part time does not mean unreliable.
There is also the transport reality. Cottage roads, boat crossings, and tight cabin doorways are hard on appliances. Scratches and dings that would sting on a brand new stainless fridge simply do not matter on a sensibly priced used one.
Simple beats smart. Touchscreens and wifi features have no business at the cottage. Mechanical dials and basic controls have fewer things to fail, and they fail less often in a building that gets cold and damp in the off season.
Size for the space. Cottage kitchens are small and propane or hydro service can be limited. An apartment-size fridge or a 24 inch stove often fits the space and the power supply better than full size units.
Mind the off season. If your cottage is not heated in winter, remember that standard fridges should be emptied, unplugged, propped open, and left clean when you close up. Choosing a fridge that is easy to defrost and wipe down makes closing weekend faster.
Think about the freezer. Cottage life runs on frozen burgers and bait. A standalone used chest freezer is one of the cheapest, most reliable appliances you can buy, and it earns its keep all season.
Here is a move plenty of our customers make: upgrade the appliance at home, and send the old one to the cottage. Buying a new or newer used fridge for the house and trucking the old fridge north gets you two functional kitchens for one purchase. If the old unit needs a small repair before it earns its retirement up north, we can handle that too.
Al's Appliance carries a rotating selection of used fridges, stoves, freezers, washers, and more, all checked over and ready to work, serving Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, and Guelph. Grab what the cottage needs on your way through, and spend your money on the dock instead.
