Dishwasher Not Cleaning Dishes Properly? Here Is Why

The cycle ran, the dishes are hot, and they are still dirty. Gritty glasses, cloudy film, food stuck to the top rack. A dishwasher that technically works but does not actually clean is one of the most frustrating appliance problems, partly because the cause is usually fixable. Work through this list before you give up and start hand washing.

1. Clean the Spray Arms

The spinning arms have small holes that jet water onto your dishes, and those holes clog with food particles and mineral scale. Pop the arms off (most twist or unclip), hold them up to the light, and clear blocked holes with a toothpick. Spin each arm by hand to make sure nothing is binding it.

2. Clean the Filter

If you read our June post on dishwashers that will not drain, you know this one. A dirty filter does not just block draining. It lets the machine recirculate dirty water over your dishes. Rinse it under hot water with a brush. Monthly is the right frequency.

3. Check Your Water Temperature

Dishwashers clean with hot water, and many rely on your home's hot water supply. Run the kitchen tap until hot before starting the cycle so the machine fills hot from the first second. If your water heater is set very low, dishes pay the price.

4. Respect the Loading Rules

Blocked spray arms cannot clean. Face the dirty side of dishes toward the centre, do not nest bowls, and keep tall items from stopping the arm rotation. And skip the full pre-rinse. Modern detergents need a little soil to work against, but do scrape solids.

5. Deal with Hard Water

Much of the Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, and Guelph area has hard water, and it shows up as white film on glasses and scale inside the machine. Use a rinse aid, consider a detergent with water softening agents, and run a citric acid or dishwasher cleaner cycle monthly. Cloudy glasses in this region are usually chemistry, not a broken machine.

6. Use Fresh, Quality Detergent

Detergent absorbs moisture and loses potency. That bulk bag of pods from two years ago may be the entire problem. Store detergent sealed and dry, and dose to your water hardness.
