Freezer Frost Buildup: What It Means and How to Stop It

You reach in for the ice cream and have to chisel past a glacier to get it. Frost buildup in the freezer is easy to ignore until it starts swallowing shelf space, frosting over your food, and quietly driving up your hydro bill. In summer, when the freezer is opened constantly and the air is humid, it builds faster than any other time of year. Here is what is actually causing it.

Where Frost Comes From

Frost is just humidity that got into the freezer and froze. A little light frost over months is normal on older manual defrost units. Heavy buildup on a modern frost free freezer is not normal, and it always has a cause.

The door is the usual suspect. Every door opening lets in a cloud of humid summer air. Worse is a door that does not seal: a worn or torn gasket, a door blocked from closing by an overfilled shelf, or hinges that have sagged out of alignment. Try the paper test. Close the door on a strip of paper, and if it pulls out with no resistance, your gasket is leaking air around the clock.

Hot and humid habits help it along. Putting warm food straight into the freezer, holding the door open while you decide on dinner, and a freezer placed in a humid garage all feed the frost.

A failed defrost system is the serious one. Frost free freezers run a heater on a timer to melt frost off the cooling coils several times a day. When the defrost heater, timer, or thermostat fails, frost builds on the coils until cold air cannot circulate. The telltale pattern: heavy frost at the back panel, a freezer that seems weaker than it used to be, and eventually a fridge compartment that will not stay cold either.

How to Defrost Properly

If frost has taken over, do a full manual defrost. Move food to a cooler, unplug the unit, prop the door open, and lay towels down. Let it melt naturally. Do not chip at ice with a knife, and do not aim a heat gun at the plastic. You can puncture a refrigerant line and turn a free fix into a dead freezer. Once dry, restart it, and watch what happens over the next two weeks.

If the Frost Comes Right Back

Rapid frost return after a clean defrost means a failed gasket or a failed defrost component, and both are proper repairs. The good news is they are common, affordable fixes that are far cheaper than replacing the unit, and far cheaper than the spoiled food when the freezer finally quits in August.
