Keep Your Fridge and Freezer Cool When Summer Heat Arrives

June is here, and so are the first real stretches of heat in Southern Ontario. While you are reaching for cold drinks and ice cream, your fridge and freezer are quietly working harder than they have all year. Warmer kitchens, frequent door openings, and full shelves all add strain. A little attention now can prevent a mid-July breakdown.

Here is how to keep your refrigeration running smoothly all summer long.

Why Summer Is Hard on Your Fridge

Your fridge does not create cold. It removes heat. The hotter the room, the harder the compressor works to pump that heat out. Add in kids opening the door every ten minutes and warm groceries from the car, and your fridge can run almost nonstop on hot days. That extra runtime drives up your hydro bill and wears out parts faster.

Six Easy Ways to Help It Out

1. Clean the condenser coils. Dusty coils trap heat and force the compressor to work harder. Unplug the fridge and vacuum the coils at the back or underneath. Ten minutes, twice a year, makes a real difference.

2. Check the door seals. Close the door on a piece of paper. If it slides out easily, your gasket is leaking cold air. Wipe seals clean and replace them if they are cracked or loose.

3. Leave breathing room. Your fridge needs airflow around the sides and back to shed heat. Keep a few centimetres of clearance and avoid boxing it in next to the stove.

4. Set the right temperature. Aim for 3 to 4 degrees Celsius in the fridge and minus 18 in the freezer. Colder than that just burns electricity.

5. Keep it reasonably full. A stocked fridge holds its temperature better than an empty one, but do not block the vents inside. Air needs to circulate.

6. Cool food before storing. Putting hot leftovers straight in forces the fridge to fight that heat. Let dishes cool on the counter for a few minutes first.

If your fridge is running constantly, sweating on the outside, making new clicking or buzzing sounds, or struggling to keep milk cold, do not wait. Small problems in June become spoiled groceries in July. A failing fridge in a heat wave is one of the most stressful appliance breakdowns there is, and repair calendars fill up fast once the temperature climbs.
