Start with the Obvious Checks

Is it actually on? Ice makers have a switch or a wire arm that shuts them off when the bin is full. A bumped switch or a raised arm is the easiest fix of all. Some models also have a control panel setting that gets toggled accidentally.

Is the freezer cold enough? Ice makers will not cycle if the freezer is warmer than about minus 15 degrees Celsius. If your freezer is running warm, ice production stops long before your frozen food complains.

Is the water filter overdue? A clogged filter starves the ice maker of water, producing small, hollow cubes first and then nothing. If it has been more than six months, replace the filter. This solves a surprising number of no-ice complaints.

The Common Mechanical Culprits

A frozen fill tube. The small tube that feeds water into the ice mould can freeze solid, blocking new water. Carefully thawing it restores ice, but if it keeps refreezing, there is an underlying water pressure or temperature problem.

A failed water inlet valve. This valve opens to fill the ice mould. When it weakens with age or clogs with mineral deposits, you get slow ice, tiny cubes, or none at all.

A worn ice maker assembly. The motor, ejector, and thermostat inside the ice maker unit itself wear out, usually after five to ten years. Often the most cost-effective repair is replacing the whole assembly rather than chasing individual parts.
