July 1 Is Coming: Your Moving Day Appliance Checklist

In Ontario, July 1 is more than Canada Day. It is one of the busiest moving days of the year, with leases turning over and home closings stacking up across the region. If you are moving in the next couple of weeks, your appliances deserve a spot on the planning list. Here is how to get ahead of it.

If Your Appliances Are Moving with You

Empty and defrost the fridge and freezer at least 24 hours ahead. Prop the doors open to dry so you do not arrive at the new place with a mouldy fridge. Once it is moved, let it stand upright for a few hours before plugging it in.

Disconnect the washer properly. Shut off the water valves, drain the hoses, and secure the drum if your front-loader came with shipping bolts. A drum bouncing around in a moving truck is how washers die young.

Cap the dryer connection. For gas dryers, hire a professional to disconnect and reconnect the gas line. For electric, coil and tape the cord and vent hose so nothing tears.

Measure twice at the new place. Door widths, stair turns, and the appliance spaces themselves. The number of fridges that fit the old kitchen but not the new hallway is higher than you would think.

If the New Place Comes with Appliances

Inspect everything on day one. Run the dishwasher empty, test every stove burner, listen to the fridge, and run a quick wash cycle. If something is broken, you want to know while it is fresh, especially in a rental where the landlord is responsible.

Clean before you trust. Pull the fridge shelves and wash them, clean the oven, and empty the dryer lint trap and vent. You do not know the last owner's habits, and a packed dryer vent is a fire risk.

If You Are Arriving to Empty Spaces

Plenty of homes change hands with no appliances at all, and the gap between moving in and getting a fridge is a long one in July heat. This is where buying used makes enormous sense.
