Whether you are a first-time buyer, a new tenant, or a landlord turning over a unit, appliances are one of the most overlooked parts of a move. Here is how to handle them right.

Before the Move: Know What Is Coming With You

Check your purchase agreement or lease carefully. Appliances are often listed as inclusions or exclusions, and assumptions cause ugly surprises on possession day. If you are bringing your own machines, measure twice. Door widths, stairwells, and the appliance alcoves at the new place all matter. A fridge that fit the old kitchen does not always fit the new one.

Moving the Appliances Themselves

Fridges should be emptied, defrosted, and ideally moved upright. If a fridge must be tilted, let it stand upright for several hours before plugging it in so the compressor oil settles. Washers need the drum secured, and hoses drained and bagged. Dryers should have the vent disconnected and the cord protected. Stoves are heavy and awkward, so use proper equipment or proper help.
