Then Factor in Age: How Long Appliances Typically Last

• Refrigerators: 10 to 15 years

• Washing machines: 10 to 12 years

• Dryers: 10 to 13 years

• Dishwashers: 9 to 12 years

• Stoves and ovens: 13 to 15 years, often longer for simple models

An appliance in the first half of its expected life is usually worth repairing. One in the final stretch deserves more scrutiny, because another component may fail soon after the first.

Signs a Repair Is the Right Call

The appliance is under 8 years old. The problem is a single known component such as a belt, pump, fan, thermostat, or door seal. The machine has been reliable until now. You like the unit and it fits your space.

Signs Replacement Makes More Sense

This is the second or third repair in a couple of years. The compressor, motor, or control board has failed on an older unit. Energy costs matter to you and the appliance is over a decade old. Parts are discontinued or hard to source.

The Option Most People Forget: Quality Used

Repair or brand new is a false choice. A checked, working used appliance often costs about the same as a major repair on a dying machine, and far less than new.
