Lower Your Hydro Bill: Summer Appliance Energy Tips

Summer hydro bills in Ontario have a way of creeping up. The air conditioner gets the blame, but your everyday appliances are quietly contributing too, and they are working harder in the heat. The good news is that a few habit changes and some smart timing can take a real bite out of your bill without sacrificing comfort.
Shift Your Laundry and Dishes to Off-Peak Hours
If you are on time-of-use hydro rates, electricity is cheapest overnight and on weekends. Running the dishwasher after dinner cleanup and doing laundry on Saturday morning instead of a weekday afternoon costs you nothing in effort and saves money on every single load. Many newer machines have delay-start buttons for exactly this purpose.
Wash Cold and Skip the Heat Where You Can
Heating water is the single biggest energy cost of washing clothes. Modern detergents are designed for cold water, and your summer clothes will thank you for it. On the dishwasher, skip the heated dry cycle and crack the door open after the final rinse. Dishes air-dry quickly in warm weather.
Let the Dryer Rest
Nothing dries laundry cheaper than a June afternoon. A clothesline or drying rack costs pennies and keeps heat out of your house, which also gives your air conditioner a break. When you do use the dryer, clean the lint trap every load and dry full loads back to back so the drum stays warm.
Help Your Fridge Work Smarter
Your fridge runs around the clock, so small efficiency gains add up. Keep the coils clean, check that door seals are tight, and set it to 3 or 4 degrees Celsius rather than maximum cold. If you have a second fridge that holds nothing but a few condiments, consider unplugging it until you actually need the space.
Cook Outside or Cook Small
Every hour the oven runs in July heats your kitchen, and then your air conditioner spends money removing that heat. Summer is the season for the BBQ, the slow cooker, the air fryer, and the microwave. Save the big oven bakes for cooler evenings.
When an Old Appliance Is Costing You Money
Appliances more than fifteen years old can use double the electricity of their modern equivalents, and fridges are the worst offenders. If your fridge runs constantly, your dryer takes two cycles to finish a load, or your dishwasher is from another decade, the math may favour replacing it. A newer used appliance in good condition often pays for itself in energy savings within a few years, which is the best of both worlds: a lower purchase price and a lower monthly bill.
