Washer Not Spinning? Here Is What It Means and What to Do

You pull open the washer door and everything inside is dripping wet. The cycle finished, but the spin never happened. With summer activities filling the laundry basket with grass-stained shorts and beach towels, a washer that will not spin brings the whole house to a halt. Here is how to figure out what is going on.

Start with the Simple Stuff

Unbalanced load. Modern washers refuse to spin if the load is lopsided, like one heavy blanket on one side of the drum. Redistribute the items evenly and run a spin cycle again. This solves more no-spin complaints than any other fix.

Overloaded drum. Stuffing the machine past capacity can prevent it from reaching spin speed. Try splitting the load in half.

Wrong cycle or setting. Delicate and hand-wash cycles use slow or no spin on purpose. Double check the dial before assuming something is broken.

Drainage problem. A washer will not spin if it cannot drain first. If you see standing water in the drum, check the drain hose for kinks and the drain pump filter for lint, coins, and the occasional missing sock.

Signs of a Mechanical Problem

If the basics check out, one of these is the likely cause:

Worn drive belt. On belt-driven machines, a stretched or snapped belt means the motor runs but the drum does not turn. You may hear the motor humming with no movement.

Faulty lid switch or door lock. Top-loaders will not spin if the lid switch fails, and front-loaders will not spin if the door lock does not engage. If the machine does not click when you close it, this is a strong suspect.

Failing motor coupler or clutch. These wear parts connect the motor to the transmission. When they fail, you often hear grinding or rattling during what should be the spin cycle.

Bad control board or timer. If cycles are behaving erratically in general, the brain of the machine may be the issue.

Should You Fix It or Replace It?

A belt, lid switch, or coupler repair is usually well worth doing, especially on a quality machine under ten years old. A failed motor or control board on an older builder-grade unit may cost more than the washer is worth.
