Washing Machine Smells Bad? How to Fix It for Good

You open the washer to start a load and get hit with a musty, swampy smell. In July, with humidity high and the laundry room warm, washer odours go from mildly annoying to impossible to ignore. Worse, that smell transfers to your supposedly clean clothes. Here is why it happens and how to fix it properly.

Why Washers Start to Stink

Front-load washers are the usual offenders. Their door seals trap water, and the airtight design that makes them efficient also makes them a greenhouse for mildew. Add in cold water washes, excess detergent, and a door kept closed between loads, and you have residue buildup that bacteria love. Top-loaders are not immune either, especially around the rim and in the dispenser drawers.

The Deep Clean Routine

Scrub the door gasket. Pull back the folds of the rubber seal on a front-loader and you will likely find dark mildew and maybe a lost sock. Wipe it down with a 50/50 vinegar and water mix or a mild bleach solution, getting into every fold.

Clean the dispenser drawer. Pull it out completely and wash it in the sink. Detergent and softener residue back here is a major odour source.

Run a cleaning cycle. Use the machine's tub clean setting if it has one, or run the hottest, longest cycle empty with two cups of white vinegar or a washing machine cleaner tablet. Do this monthly.

Check the drain pump filter. Front-loaders have a small filter behind a panel at the bottom front. Coins, lint, and hair collect there and rot. Put a towel down, open it slowly, and clean it out. Most people have never done this once.

Habits That Keep It Fresh

Leave the door and dispenser drawer open between loads so the drum can dry out. Use high efficiency detergent, and use less of it than you think you need. Excess suds leave the residue that feeds the smell. Move wet laundry to the dryer promptly, which in summer humidity matters double.

When a Smell Means a Real Problem

If you have deep cleaned the machine and a foul or sewage-like odour keeps returning, the problem may be deeper: a clogged drain hose, a failing pump, standing water in the outer tub, or a drain standpipe issue. A burning smell is different again and means stop using the machine and call right away. These are not cleaning problems. They are repair problems.
